Then I say to myself, “self, what would Lil’ Abe do?”

So, I call a North Dakotan, Kay (referred to me by long time friend, Nancy), and as soon as she picks up the phone, I say “I am soooo lonely.” In true North Dakotan fashion, she invites me to a family dinner. And she invites me to her daughter’s basketball game! Oh yeah!!

Note to self: find more people to do this with. Your survival depends on it.

I am traveling the 4 corners of North Dakota to get these 25 signatures – don’t want them all from one city. Yesterday, I did about 400 miles. Today will be the same. Making progress.

Plus I need my eyebrows trimmed and barbers do it better. I can clip my own nose and ear hairs, thank you very much!!

I did laundry today in a laundromat. Wow, it has been many years since I have done that. I tell you, I was robbed! It cost $15 to do 4 loads. Makes me want to wear my clothes longer before deciding they are dirty – just on principle alone!! Swines!

Now that I have met enough media, I am getting the 25 signatures. This doesn’t seem like much, but understand that I need to have signatures from the four corners of North Dakota, not just one city in ND. However, I have it pretty much lined up. So, the rest of this week will be devoted to picking them up. Lots of driving back and forth.

The drives are nice here. The only times it isn’t is when there is heavy fog, snow or wind, or a combination of them. That’s when I have to get off the phones. Apparently, everybody here does that. They get off the phones when they are driving in rough weather. I thought I was just being too nervous.

Well, I suspect many a California would still talk on the phone.

So far, I have never seen an accident, but the number of cars in ditches is approaching two dozen now. Wow!

I cried a little today. Lil Abe went missing this morning, and they don’t have amber alerts here. He’s gone and he’s not coming back. I don’t understand how it could happen. I mean, it’s not like it ever reached 32 degrees here, yet that once shiny bright penny (always the highlight of my day) took his leave from the side-runner of my car.

I’m gonna miss him. It is a sad, sad day.

I think somebody stole him.

There is something missing in my life.

I miss the fingers, emotional rages, cars cutting me off, tail-gaiters, speeding cars, impatient drivers, people who don’t signal on purpose, arms waving in the air from the car behind me, and the downright rude behavior by California drivers. In the 4500 miles that I have driven in North Dakota, I have yet to experience any of this. Aside from cars in the ditches, I haven’t even seen an accident. Oh, for the good ol’ days. Those California drivers – let’s face it – they are bastards.

I saw Lil’ Abe. He is alive and well! The amazing thing is that I don’t see any ice on the penny, yet it is still there…..he’s getting a bit oxidized, but I think he’s in good spirits.

In order to submit this initiative to the Secretary of State in North Dakota, I have to have 25 people who sign notarized affidavits that they want to be able to get signatures in order to get this initiative on the ballot. One of those 25 needs to be the Chairman, and that person will have most of the responsibility.

Well, today I had a meeting with a person that I believe is perfect for the job. He’s a retired former business owner and thinks pretty much the same way I do. If he accepts this position, he will be a valuable asset.

Looks like I may have found a headquarters – so to speak. This motel/hotel business is expensive, a waste of time (packing/unpacking) and downright boring. I feel like a hermit. And there is no one to talk to.

This place that I might be staying at has a three car garage, ALL for me. oh, ho, ho, ho, oh, arh, arh, arh, arhhhh!!! I’ve never lived in a place with a three car garage, but as any woman who has gone house hunting with a guy knows, the house could be a rathole, but have a three car garage, and the man will go, “cool, let’s buy it honey.” I won’t even be able to use the three car garage with all my manly tools at home…sigh…but just knowing it is there…

I have gotten a few more sponsors too. So, things are looking up!

As I looked at my car this morning admiring how far the ice cycles ran down the front bumper, almost touching the ground, I noticed that even the ice cycles had frost on them. Who would have thought? Then when I went back to the motel door, my jacket touched the door and began sticking to it. That’s just WRONG!

On a more pleasant note, I discovered the difference between freezing cold and tolerable cold. That difference is about 17 degrees. See, 7 degrees is tolerable. Actually, it can even be a pleasant day. However, -10 degrees, like it was this morning, now that is FREEZING COLD.

More importantly in about 2 seconds, I can tell if it is a tolerable cold or a freezing cold. I don’t need a thermometer or to listen to the weather channel. All I have to do is breath in once through my nose and if my nose hairs stiffen up, I know it is below zero. It’s a good gauge for estimating the temperature.
